Our school was founded in 1991 by the Social Education Society which gave birth to non state- supported educational development. The activity of the school is based on teachers', pupils' and partners' collaboration. The school cares for comprehensive education which should be a base to develop individual talents. Didactic programmes realized at the school are far more extended than those of the Ministry of Education. They include contemporary methods and forms of work. Our desire is to educate the youth to be critically thoughtful citizens of the 21st century Europe, well prepared to exist in the free market economy and democratic and intercultural society, at the same time respecting tradition, family and patriotic values.

Our school was built in the old town and is the oldest school in Cosenza. The school has got 109 people as staff (87 teachers, 22 in the administration) and 895 students. Most of the students come from Cosenza but many of them also come from the surroundings. Families' backgrounds is not homogeneous: students come from both educated and uneducated families. Students who attend our school are usually interested in humanistic and classical studies, but scientific subjects are well developed and focused about. The foreign languages are English and French. Once graduated, our students can attend any university and choose any subject. Our aim is to give them culture but also the capability of proving themselves in any field and the consciousness- through the many extra-didactic activities we propose and they join in- of the world and of the people around us. We are deeply interested in matching past and present and, through foreign languages and sciences, give a shape of the many possible futures.

According to these leading ideas our school would like to participate in European cooperation to enrich students and teachers' knowledge about cultures, languages, traditions, diversities and history of the partner countries.

Our school is situated in a small village 40 kilometres away from Lisbon, the capital city. Azambuja is a rural/ industrial area. Because of this aspect there are many immigrants living here, the majority from Eastern Europe origin (Romania, Ukraine, Russia). There are some historical places as Azambuja was colonized by the Romans and an old palace.

It is located near River Tejo, and therefore the soil is extremely fertile, hence the importance of agriculture. Our pupils' parents level of education is usually low and there are not many prospects of cultural exchanges. Our pupils' age range is 12 to 18, even though we also have older pupils. We provide regular courses but also technical ones. Our school is well equipped in terms of the new technologies, we have Datashows in all classrooms as well as computers and internet access. There are also three smatboards available. Our resource center and library are also quite complete. There is a cafeteria and a canteen, where students can eat snacks or complete meals at affordable prices.

We are a secondary school situated in the north of Romania. Our school offers its students the possibility to choose from a wide range of profiles, such as computing, accounting, mechanics, environment protection, banqueting etc. Our town is a small one and we are surrounded by many villages, so many of our students come from a rural area. Although the area we live in was considered for many years to be quite isolated, Europe and the European Union have come to be part of our lives in the last few years. Romania has joined the European Union in 2007 and since then, many of the people in this region have opted to work abroad. Many of our students' parents work in such countries as: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland. We want them to learn as much as possible about what being a European citizen means and to come into contact with other people living in Europe. Through ou project we intend to make them aware of the cultural richness present and motivate them to respect, preserve and promote it.

We are a public high school located in an industrial town of Kocaeli. The school has 50 staff and 1270 students. Related to the socio-economic structure of Darica, most of the students come from uneducated families. The aim of the school is to give the students the education they need not only for meeting all their needs in adapting to the modern life, but also for prompting them to develop themselves as qualified individuals for their future. Related to the fact that Turkey is a candidate member of the European Union, the school would like to participate in European cooperation in order to enrich its knowledge about the cultures, languages, traditions and history of the European countries. They also want to learn about the diversity among the partners. With the involvement of the students and staff in such a cooperation, they believe they may contribute and develop the level of their education.

Our school is located on the way from Toledo to Madrid. The area where our center is located has changed ts agricultural function into a mainly residential one, as it is on the way from Madrid to Toledo. Our pupils come from many different backgrounds. The traditional family lives on the agricultural, industrial and construction sectors; most of them have a low level on academic education. We can also find minority social groups in this area, with special needs (10% of the whole).

By carrying out this project we will transmit our students the importance of living together in harmony with other people from different cultures , getting to know their culture and customs. By working together in a team from a European frame to reach the same aim we would like to reinforce the pupils' self-esteem through individual and group work, and to help them to overcome the language barrier in the communication with other partners.

Objectives:

a) Concrete objectives- Our key objective is linguistic. English will be the common language and, thus, our students will become aware of the need to know a foreign language in their attempt to communicate with students from other countries. Throughout the project, the students will come into contact with different elements of culture belonging to certain members of the European Union, so they will be able to see on their own the cultural diversity that surrounds them. One of the advantages of being a European citizen is the fact that one can travel freely in the member countries as tourist or to look for work possibilities. When doing this, one comes into contact with the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe. Our project offers the chance for students from six different countries to better understand this variety so that they acquire a sense of tolerance. This will be possible by working together in order to eliminate stereotypes and prejudice. We’ll also deal with prevention of xenophobia in order to celebrate cultural diversity and prevent xenophobic and discriminatory attitudes.

b) Subject and problems: The main problems we address is the need to try to preserve traditions and local specificity. We’ll deal with the issue of local identity in order to make it known throughout Europe. This will be our contribution in the attempt to save our values and keep it fo the generations to come.

c) Approach: In order to reach our objectives, both students and teachers will attend the visits, will have the opportunity to explore certain elements of local culture. Like this, they will get to know the local history of the area as well as their importance in the region. By using modern technology, our students will exchange information on certain topics. They will keep in touch through the internet for the visits; we’ll invite representatives of local culture, artisans, so that the teachers and students get to know minutely traditional skills from different regions in Europe. We’ll also make leaflets and presentations that will contain key information for the project.

European added value

By dealing with cultural and historical heritage, by coming into contact with values of each participant country, by learning from one another, the students will be able to learn the importance of intercultural tolerance in the present European context. They will be able to discover neighbor cultures but, in the same time, to promote their own. All these will be made possible by the use of modern technology and by active collaboration. Intercultural exchange will offer our students the chance to form a vision on what being a European citizen means, and, thus, they will be able to promote these elements in their own communities.

Impact:

1. All participants will:

- Increase their self- esteem;

- Acquire new knowledge of several cultures in Europe;

- Develop increased sensitivity and tolerance towards other cultures in multicultural Europe;

2. Pupils will:

- Be given a new motivation to learn foreign languages;

- Improve their level of linguistic and technical skills;

- Create new working relationships with each other and with pupils from partner schools;

- Make new friendships;

- Improve their ability to look for, classify, talk;

- Will develop certain skills: initiative, dynamisM, creativity, respect for the work partner, consistency, curiosity, civism, responsibility towards European values.

3. Teachers will:

- Have a chance to discuss teaching methods and approaches within a broad European framework;

- Acquire wider knowledge of their methodological and didactic means through transnational cooperation;

- Improve their skill in cooperative working, not only in the international groups but also in their own schools through cross-curricular cooperation between subjects.

4. Participating institutions will:

- Be able to link normal theoretical classroom learning in several subject areas to practical work in presenting local and regional knowledge;

- Establish new international contacts for the future cooperation;

- Increase the competence of teachers in participating in international projects;

- Gain prestige.

Distribution of tasks

1. Each partner institution will make presentation sheets for each student

2. The students will be in charge with making leaflets, power-point presentations and brochures about the schools they attend, as well as about the region they live in; these will be made for printing and for publishing on the common website.

3. For each visit, the host school will suggest a theme or topic to be discussed in concordance with the project objectives.

4. The partner school in Romania will be in charge of designing the common website, where all the project products of our work together will be uploaded.

5. Each school will gather information and will organize them as presentations of their choice for each work visit.

6. For each work visit, the host school will organize certain field trips relevant for the topic chosen.

7. For each work visit, the host school will organize workshops, thematic exhibitions; following these, the students will be asked to make different products, such as essays, scrapbooks, reports etc.

Cooperation and communication

We have already formed an N.I.N.G. network where students and teachers have been invited. This network will be used to exchange information needed for the project. Here, both students and teachers will be able to get to know each other better, to learn about expectations of this project.

Communication will also be made through Yahoo Messenger. Students will exchange their Yahoo Messenger ID’s so they can communicate in their spare time. Like this, they can learn about their common hobbies, passions or school experience.

These ways of communication will be of great importance for the project, since our key objective is developing English language knowledge. They will be able to practice in both formal and informal circumstances.

Participants’ involvement

The success of our project will be ensured by the active involvement of both teachers and students.

The teachers will be in charge of planning the activities and doing the formalities connected with the project. They will have an active role in organizing and managing the project and in stimulating the students, as well.

The success of the project will also depend on the students, too. The entire project and the activities we plan revolve around their interests, so that they will be engaged in all the steps we take. Our students will also come with suggestions of their own for certain activities. They will have the opportunity to make the products that will be presented to all the participants, and to make this project known to their communities. The materials they make will be presented in the schools they attend, so that they can show all their schoolmates the opportunities they have if they participate in a project.

Integration into ongoing activities

The theme of the project will be integrated into various subject areas in the curriculum, and therefore addresses total pupil development. Teachers of humanistic, scientific and technical subjects will work together to develop and integrate the project themes, with the aid of experts with specific skills. The project will bring together knowledge from several subject areas, such as English language, native language, multimedia and IT, regional education, literature, history, geography and religion.

A multicultural project is welcome in an educational system that promotes the historical and cultural exchange between European states. School curriculum across Europe is aimed to promote national values closely interlinked with the European ones. All this is in the spirit of European motto "United in diversity”. This will make it easier for all students to get familiar with the other countries in Europe, by getting to know their own culture and by interacting with others. Starting from local and regional level, and moving up to continental level, all students will be able to enrich their knowledge about the culture, traditions and history of their own country by correlating it to that of other counties, by finding similarities and differences, by enlarging his cultural horizon.

One off our main objectives is aimed at English language learning. Students are directed towards developing skills and becoming independent learners. They work in groups and collaborate to solve certain tasks. They are encouraged to express their opinions and to respect their partners in the activities they participate. This project gives them the opportunity to use English in real life situations and to create bridges between neighbor cultures.

Evaluation

When we agreed to start this project, we intended to plan it thoroughly. And a good organization also means constant evaluation. We intend to watch carefully if the objectives we’ve set are reached in our activities. This will be done in the form of pre- and post-activity quizzes. Our pre-activity quizzes will be intende to gather information about the quality of the work that will be done. Thus, we can cooperate to organize activities that will be of great interest to everyone. We’ll be able to anticipate possible problems that we may encounter, and, thus, we’ll be able to eliminate them. Our post-activity quizzes will mainly be concerned with the relevance and validity of our work, namely if the objectives we set were reached. This will also be intended to improve the following activities. The following aspects will be evaluated:

- Are deadline met?

- Are our activities in concordance with the themes we chose and with the aims of the project?

- Do our activities make our students independent learners? Do they develop their skills?

- Is there a real cooperation and cultural exchange?

- Are our activities relevant in the context of lifelong learning?

Dissemination and the use of results

We intend to make our project known on different levels:

- In each participating institution: we’ll create a Comenius classroom or a Comenius corner where we intend to exhibit products of our work. Thus the staff and students in each school can learn about the opportunities a Comenius project offers, and it could also stimulate them to start similar projects. Another way to disseminate our project in our schools will be writing certain articles in the school magazines and uploading these articles on the school websites, as well.

- In the local community: we want to invite the local press to our activities so that we can promote our project on a wider scale; we also want to make our project known in the teachers’; meetings we attend throughout the year.

- The leaflets will be distributed to other county schools;

- The project will be presented in educational and methodical circles;

- Leaflets and articles may be published in educational magazines of methodology (history or geography);

- The final project results (products)will be available to all those interested
